Write your fit sheet

Check a marina before you book a berth. Lesson 1, 12 min.

A fit sheet is one page that lists what your boat and your plans need. Write it before you call a marina. It lets you ask the marina clear questions.

Your boat

  • Length overall, beam, draft and air draft. The Foundations course explains each one.
  • Use the largest value for each measure. Include fixed items such as antennas and radar in the air draft.

Your stay

  • Your dates, and how much you can move them.
  • The stay type: transient, a season or a year.
  • Whether you live aboard. Ask whether the marina has rules for people who live aboard.
  • Whether you want the boat in the water or in dry storage.

Your services

Mark each service as must have or nice to have: shore power, fresh water, pump-out, fuel, Wi-Fi, haul-out and repair, parking and gate access.

For shore power, write the amperage and plug type that your boat uses. The marina must match them.

Your paperwork

Write what your insurer requires for a berth. Ask the marina which proof of insurance it needs.

Use the directory to make a short list

Search by city. Open each listing. Follow its link to the OpenStreetMap record. Note the phone number and the website. A blank field is not a "no", so use the list to decide whom to call, not whom to choose.
